Required Qualifications: (As Evidenced by an Attached Resume)

Bachelor’s Degree (or foreign equivalent or higher). Four (4) years of full time fundraising experience in a Higher Education, a large non-profit or complex healthcare system. Proven record of success in cultivating, soliciting, and raising funds from individual donors or institutions. Experience managing numerous priorities and a portfolio of donor/client relationships. Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

Two (2) or more additional years of fundraising experience in Higher Education, a large nonprofit or complex healthcare system. Contact management software experience (i.e. Raiser's Edge). Proficiency working with Google products (i.e. Google Mail, Google Calendar, etc.). Proficiency working with Microsoft Office (i.e. Word, Excel, Access & PowerPoint).

Brief Description of Duties:

The Director of Development (DOD) is expected to work to build a portfolio and will carry a portfolio of 100-200 major gift prospects. The DOD will dedicate his or her time exclusively to cultivating and soliciting qualified alumni and friends who have the resources and inclination to support SBU’s College of Arts and Sciences (CAS). This position requires excellent communication, verbal andwritten, and strong analytical skills. In addition, this position requires mufti-tasking skills and flexibility. This position will increase financial support for the University and College and is expected to raise in excess of $1.5 million per year. While subject to change based on an individual development officer’s portfolio, the DOD will be required to meet clearly defined metrics annually including 130 face-to-face visits, 180 substantive contacts, 15 major gift proposals presented, 8 proposals closed, and a dollar goal based on tenure, portfolio, and opportunity. The selected candidate will be responsible for the following duties:

  • Develop and implement a comprehensive fundraising program.

  • Identify, qualify, cultivate, solicit, and/or steward each prospect.

  • Steward existing donors appropriately to encourage long-term relationships.

  • Achieve specific and measurable goals for contacts, effective portfolio management, proposals presented, and dollars raised.

  • Serve as a member of the Stony Brook Advancement team, coordinating efforts with the broader work of University Advancement, participating as a professional and team member in various Advancement tasks and functions, and communicating clearly and consistently with colleagues about goals, progress, and activities.

  • Engage volunteers to utilize them in cultivation and solicitation of gifts.

  • Attend appropriate alumni, college, and university events that present opportunities to advance prospect or donor relationships.

  • Time reporting results of meeting and visits and recording in database.

  • Other duties or projects as assigned as appropriate to rank and departmental mission.

Special Notes:

This is a full time position. FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Minimum salary threshold must be met to maintain FLSA exemption.
